Remember those two types of people I mentioned? Well, let’s start with talking about the first kind. The best joint credit account is also realistically one of the best credit cards – and the most expensive.
That would be The Platinum Card®. Towering high annual fee, huge minimum spend for the bonus – all ameliorated when the cost is split between two people. It’s $799 (Supplementary Platinum Cards: $250 each), but realistically you could get one and share it – the perks, bonuses and credits all make it worthwhile.

For couples looking to travel, the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite is worth considering.
First perk: it’s one of the few cards in Canada that doesn’t charge a fee for a supplementary card and you get the full range of perks (First supplementary Card is $0/year ($50/year on each additional Card)). For its $150 annual fee, you get a decent welcome bonus, and an ongoing Scene points bonus every year you spend enough on it (easier to do with two people, details in the box below). And as for the travel perks, it’s got comprehensive travel insurance, 0% FX fees and 6 lounge passes a year. Not too shabby!

Serious (married) couples deserve a serious travel card.
And if the Amex Platinum is a little steep for your comfort, consider the American Express® Aeroplan®* Reserve Card. It’s got a BIG welcome bonus: Earn up to 85,000 Aeroplan®* points., plus Unlimited access to Maple Leaf Lounges, fourth night free on hotels when you redeem with Aeroplan points, priority airport check in, priority boarding – and let’s not forget the sweet metal card.
It comes at a cost though… $599 annually to be exact. And for an additional card you’ll be looking at a $199 for each additional card – but honestly, I’d consider just attaching the optional no-fee version of the additional card. You don’t get all the perks, but if you’re travelling as a couple and one of you has the Aeroplan Reserve you can enjoy the lounge access which allows for a guest from the main card anyway.

Since I already mentioned the CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card up top, I’ll give a shout out to the Scotiabank Momentum Visa Infinite down here.
It’s nearly as good, and if you’re a Scotiabank diehard, it might be preferable.
You get 4% cashback on groceries and recurring payments, 2% on gas and transit and 1% on everything else. As for the welcome bonus: 10% cash back After that you’ll be paying $120 annually. So far the same as the CIBC Dividend® Visa Infinite* Card – but the one catch is that the Scotiabank Momentum charges $$50 per supplementary card; No annual fee in the first year, including on additional cards.† (after the first year). Achilles heel? I’ll let you be the judge.

Our Take
The Tangerine Money-Back Credit Card is a no-annual-fee cash back card that allows cardholders to earn a higher cash back rate in two spending categories of their choice, such as groceries, gas, or restaurants, and a lower rate on all other purchases. By opening a Tangerine Savings Account and directing cash back earnings there, a third higher rate cash back category can be added. Additional benefits include purchase assurance and extended warranty protection, with cash back rewards automatically applied monthly.

Tangerine wins this best roommate, friend or partnership credit card category by a landslide with their Money Back Mastercard. You’ve got roommates, cool – that means you’re prioritizing saving money. So you’re going to love the fact that the Tangerine joint card has no fees – and that’s for up to FIVE additional card holders ($0 for additional cardholders).
It offers 2% cash back in two categories (choose groceries – you can buy beer at the grocery store now) and 0.5% on everything else. That money gets deposited as cash into your free Tangerine savings account, so you and the roomies can spring for something nice at the end of every month.
Confused about joint credit cards? Don't be; here's a quick overview of how joint cards work:
A joint credit card is a credit account that's shared between two or more people, typically spouses, partners, or family members. Both parties have equal access to the credit limit and are equally responsible for paying off the balance.
There are two types of people who want a joint credit card:
The joint card you pick will be different for each need, and will also change if you’re a married couple or just roommates. Here’s a few cards for your consideration:
Signing up for a joint credit card is similar to applying for an individual credit card, however, there are a few more steps to determine the creditworthiness of both applicants.
Unlike applying for a personal and individual card which is often easily done online, it typically takes a phone call or visit to the branch. With personal information, identification and account statements, the institution will pull and review each individual’s credit history. Then, the assessment is made before an approval and credit limit is determined.
This is why many Canadians opt for an individual credit card with an authorized user, which can usually be done online.
I won’t blame you if you’re a bit confused by the “joint” in all this. In short, most (but not all) credit cards offer a “supplementary” or “additional” card which is attached to yours.
In the vast majority of cases, this additional card will have all the perks associated with the primary card. The exception to this (like with the Aeroplan Reserve) are the no-fee supplementary cards. These allow you to spend onto the main card (which is great for making minimum spend for bonuses) but doesn’t privilege you with the rest of the perks, insurance coverage, etc.
Finally, there’s a very small list of cards that offer no-fee supplementary cards that act just like the main card. These are few and far between, so make sure you read the fine print before signing up. In addition to the aforementioned CIBC and Amex Cobalt cards, which have free supplementary cards, there’s also the Scotiabank Passport Visa Infinite Card, RBC Cash Back Preferred World Elite Mastercard and the Vancity enviro Visa Infinite Card.
The benefits of a joint card are clear – two people spending on one card makes it easier to collect bonuses, earn cashback and track expenses. And if the supplementary card is cheaper (or even free) than applying for a separate card, it’s a win, win, win.
But from time to time the supplementary card is expensive, or doesn’t offer all the same perks. And some credit cards offer sweet deals, but no supplementary cards at all. Which means if you’re committed to the joint lifestyle, you might be depriving yourself of good deals.
And not to get, you know, overly intimate with the conversation on credit cards, but there is the hassle of dealing with a breakup and sorting out getting a new credit card. Not to mention sharing a card means you’re only contributing to the credit score of the person whose name it’s in (which gets potentially frightening if you’re sharing it with a roommate whose debt-management habits leave something to be desired).
Basically, adding another person or people to your card means more variables that are tied to your credit – something not everyone feels comfortable with.
If you opt for a joint credit card, be aware that you are ultimately liable for your partner’s debt on the same account. If the balance suffers, it affects both credit scores, but conversely, it can improve if the balance is fully paid.
If the relationship falls apart, perhaps because of divorce or death, the account will need to be closed, which can impact your credit utilization and other factors that determine your credit score. You will also need to settle the remaining balances quickly before the account is fully closed.
Finally, you should be mindful that your partner can see all spending on the account, including your own. This can result in disagreement, so ensure that a common understanding and ground rules are set when using the card to make any purchases.
"Before jumping into a joint credit card, make sure you trust your partner's financial habits. Remember, you're both on the hook for any charges!"

Think of a joint credit card as a financial team-up for couples. It's like merging your money superpowers – you might score better rewards or a higher credit limit. Plus, it's a great way to keep your shared expenses in one place (no more "who paid for what?" debates!). But remember, with great power comes great responsibility. You're both on the hook for any charges, so make sure you're on the same page about spending before you apply. If you play your cards right (pun intended), a joint credit card can be a fantastic tool for building your financial future together.
